Building Banner

A large component of the marketing campaigns at Vicki Myhren Gallery (VMG), the premier art entity at the University of Denver, centered around bringing awareness of the gallery to the campus’ attention and directing foot traffic towards the space.

Located within the art and art history building on the north west side of campus, the gallery space was not visible to pedestrians. Rotated out quarterly or with each new exhibition, a banner on the outside of the building where the gallery was housed was one of the most effective ways to advertise our exhibitions.

This particular exhibition featured the work of Faith Wilding. Natural Parables featured paintings, watercolors, drawings, and sculptures by the renowned artist. To create the marketing campaign, I took imagery from several featured artworks to create a unique visual brand that pointed to the exhibitions main themes of environmentalism and community activism.

One work, a striped vibrant watercolor bearing the word “organize,” as well as a slightly abstracted, recurring motif of leaves and vines caught my attention. Both were included in the final design, which was finished with simple white and orange lettering over an earthy green ground. The resulting design was successful and effective across a variety of print materials like postcards and posters.

Below is a mock up of the banner on the outside of the gallery building I created for the University of Denver. (This mock-up was for a separate initiative to fund permanent signage for the gallery bearing our name and logo for use alongside of interchangeable banners we employed. It was eventually successful!)
